It is a well known fact that more adults loose their teeth through gum disease that tooth decay. Gum disease is known as gingivitis, this is the early stage and is often reversible. Plaque can cause gingivitis as this is a thin film of bacteria which makes toxins that often irritate the gums making them become swollen and bleed easily. Gum disease can be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing, regular dental check-ups and visits to the Hygienist are essential. Toothbrushes also need to be renewed on a regular basis every 2 months is recommended.

Hygienist Services Scale & Polish - The de-scale of teeth, the removal of tartar and a polish. The advise on effective oral hygiene toothbrushing and flossing to maintain healthy gums and teeth.

Airflow - Airflow is a method of removing plaque and extrinsic staining caused by tea/coffee and red wine. The latest polish available. In a jet of water and air sodium bicarbonate mixture quickly removes plaque and hard and soft coating and discoloration leaving your teeth fresh and super smooth. A whole new experience in tooth hygiene. Airflow is a mixture of air/sodium bicarbonate and water spray, all active substances are exactly proportioned. The Airflow has a pleasant citrus flavour giving your teeth a smooth refreshing feel.

Diet Advice - Diet sheets are kept and diet modified where needed.

Fluoride - Fluoride applications are carried out for some patients on the recommendations of the Dentist.

Fissure Sealents - Another preventative measure is to seal molar teeth. The molar fissures are deep and can decay easily. Sealing these with a varnish resin prevents tooth decay and makes cleaning easier.

PDU - Preventative Dental Unit is available, children and parents are invited to watch a dental video, toothbrushing is carried out under supervision in a relaxed and fun manner.

Problems
If you ever have the following symptoms here's what to do:-

  • Bad breath may improve with thoroughly daily toothbrushing if not visit the dentist for extra cleaning, advice on toothbrushing and to check for other problems.
  • If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth don't panic. This happens when you don't brush away all the plaque and germs from where your teeth and gums meet. The germs left behind inflame the gums and make them bleed. Keep brushing the problem areas gently. The bleeding should soon stop. If there's no improvement ask the dentist for help.
  • In pregnancy hormonal changes may make gum problems worse. Take extra care to brush thoroughly. Remember, NHS dental treatment is free for expectant mothers and for one year after giving birth.
  • Smoking makes gum disease worse, and may mask early signs and symptoms. If you are a smoker with gum problems think about cutting down or giving up.
  • Many people have sensistive teeth. If your gums recede slightly to expose part of the root, your teeth may hurt when you take hot or cold food or drinks. Toothpaste for sensitive teeth can often help; use your fingertips to rub a little toothpaste where teeth and gums meet. If the problem continues for more than six weeks ask the dentist for help.
