| Bleaching
Bleaching is a procedure that brightens teeth that are discoloured, stained, or have been darkened because of injury. It can be performed on any tooth, even one that has had root canal treatment. There are two types of bleaching procedures. Bleaching may be done completely in the dental office (know as chairside bleaching) or a system may be dispensed by the dentist for the patient to use at home (nightguard bleaching). |

| Bonding
Bonding is a procedure in which tooth-coloured materials are applied to the surface of a tooth. Bonding covers discoloration, repairs chips, breaks and cracks and fills in gaps. It is a virtually painless procedure that is usually completed in one visit. Periodically, it may have to be recoated or replaced, since it usually lasts from three to five years. |

| Veneers
Veneers are thin custom made shells made of tooth coloured materials that are designed to cover the front side of the teeth. They are fabricated by a dental technician, usually in a commercial dental laboratory, from a model provided by the dental office. Veneers are used to close gaps or cover teeth that are stained, poorly shaped, or slightly crooked. Placing veneers is often an irreversible process because a small amount of enamel is usually removed to accommodate the thickness of shell. Like any restoration, it is possible, over time, for the veneer to come off or for small decay to develop. In that case a new veneer may be required. |

| An alternative are white fillings which contain no mercury or metal and are natural looking. Several materials are available as white fillings. The main material is known as composite - this has two components - a gel part known as the matrix and hard particles known as the filler. Together they give characteristics that neither give alone. It can set chemically or by using a suitable light source with a particular wave length of light. This type of white filling can be placed once the tooth is prepared - on the same visit and is known as - a Direct Composite Filling. | |||||||||||||||||||
| An Indirect Composite Filling is one which is prepared in the laboratory from an impression taken of the prepared tooth and fitted at a later appointment. This is more useful for larger white fillings. Another material for white fillings is dental porcelain. Again this is by an indirect method, so the tooth is first prepared and an impression taken. The impression is dispatched to the laboratory where the filling (porcelain inlay) is custom made in dental porcelain. On a subsequent visit by the patient it is then bonded in place. White fillings give a superb natural appearance. When smiling or laughing they are invisible and are metal free. They have a translucent characteristics giving excellent aesthetics.
